They cost 68,500 DM (German price) That was 30,000 more than the regular g60 and 20,000 more than the Rallye and weighs 80kg more than the Rallye.

The paint came in either graphite or black. The interior was heated leather. Standard options were power windows f/r, power mirrors, headlight adjusters, central locking, tinted glass, MFA, 260kph speedometer, and the manual sunroof.

VWMS confirmed that there were 10-15 of these with a more aggressive tune that produced 240 hp. Estimates for 0-60 in these is 6.5 seconds and can hit a top speed that is "off the clock." That being said the gearing is also different on these to reach such high top speed.

Until the R32 was produced the Golf Limited was the highest horse power production car VW ever produced.

Out of the 71 that were produced 1 was used for crash testing. The one that was crashed has been rumored to have been reshelled into a 2-door. Also, it is rumored that VWMS produced a 2-door but these two were kept by VW.

A very limited edition hand-built Golf II variant exists, including all of the best features available at the time. Designed and built by the Volkswagen Motorsport division, only 71 of these "G60 Limited" models exist; featuring a unique number and plaque, the G60 supercharger was combined with the 16-valve GTI engine, mated to a sports transmission and Syncro four wheel drive mechanism. All of these special edition models came in black, with four doors (except two in three door), a plain two-headlight grille (not the usual GTI four headlights) and a unique blue grille detail (not red, as the GTI) and motorsport badges. It is rumored that two models were produced with air conditioning. In 1989, these cars cost in the region of £25,000 each and were primarily sold to VAG executives and management, although a few exist in Britain as of 2005. These cars produced 212 bhp, making them the most powerful VW Golfs produced until the introduction of the MKIV Golf R32 in 2003.

A limited edition, 210bhp, 227Km/h four wheeled drive Super Golf was launched by Volkswagen Motorsport in 1989. When VW build a seriously quick Golf they don't scream about it from the rooftops. Just look at the plain-looking G60 Limited Edition. To the casual observer it's just a black five-door GTI with a blue-trimmed grille. Surely such an innocuous looking Mk 2 can't be anything too special? Okay, well try this for size. Four-wheel drive. Supercharged 16V. 210bhp. 227Km/h top speed. One of only 70 versions built by VW Motorsport. It must be the ultimate example of a sleeper. Best of all, is how the heads of VW introduced the G60 Limited Edition to the press. In typical understated fashion, the head of VW Motorsport, Klaus-Peter Rosorius commented that the idea behind the project was to build ´a nice elegant-looking Golf without any exterior alterations, that incorporated a number of interesting under bonnet changes.' Who else but Volkswagen would describe a fire-breathing 210bhp supercharged 16V engine as 'interesting'?! In fact the Limited Edition is easily the most 'interesting' Mk 2 Golf ever built. For Starters it wasn't built an the main Wolfsburg production line, but at VW Motorsport's main base in Hanover. Each car was hand assembled by their motorsport technicians, with each taking a week to complete (during which time Wolfsburg could churn out several thousand cars).

THE STARTING POINT was a bodyshell featuring both Golf Rallye and Golf Syncro five-door features - the inner wheel arches for example are from the Rallye, while the outer wheelarches are standard Syncro-style items (rather than the flared arches and spats employed an the two-wheel drive G60). The windscreen too is a Rallye-style bonded-in item and is Said to add a little torsional rigidity to the bodyshell.small bumpers (much lighter than the deep bumpers found on facelift models) Only seventy of these lovinglycrafted Mk 2 Golfs were constructed, each being sprayed in metallic black and featuring a blue-trimmed grille. This was unusual in itself as it was a 'twin lamp' item rather than the quadheadlamp version sported by all other high-performance Mk 2 Golfs bar the Rallye. In fact, other than the tasty split-rim BBS alloys, the only exterior clue that this was no 'ordinary' Golf was just a couple of discreet VW Motorsport badges attached to the grille and rear panel.

In fact to the average Joe in the street, to all intents and purposes the Limited could be just a five-door GTI with different badges and a blue-rimmed grille. Which is just the way VW wanted it to be. Under the bonnet, you get the first indication of just how wild Limited really is.

Shoehorned into the engine bay is a 16V engine mated up to a VW Motorsport-tweaked G-Lader supercharger, cooled by a Rallye intercooler and a large capacity radiator. An individually-numbered engraved plaque indicates the particular Limited, The plaque has the VW Motorsport logo and the number of the car. (1-70). Transmitting the power to the ground is a VW Motorsport clutch and the 02A cable-change gearbox found in the Rallye (and said to be notchier than the GTI-style rod-change 'box), which has a reputation for being bulletproof. A Rallye-style braking system comprising beefy 280mm front vented discs, rear discs, and ABS helps haul the car down from its Autobahn storming 227Km/h top speed. Although the exterior of the car is pretty frill-free, the same can't be said for the interior, which boasts a whole load of electronic gadgets. As it should: at the time the Limited's purchase price was double that of a Golf GTI 16V (which retailed at around 3700Euro). Limited interior in black leather trimmed seats (the front ones being heated), with power-steering, electric windows and mirrors being standard equipment. Naturally, centrallocking is standard, as is a sunroof and an electric headlamplevelling control. The leather trim also extends to the doorcards, handbrake cover, steering wheel rim and the gearlever gaiten.

The only clue to the performance of the car is provided by the VW Motorsport gearknob. Until very recently, this was the most powerful production Volkswagen ever made (The R32 4Motion produces 240BHP.

All the lowdown on Number 41

VW GOLF G60 "Limited Edition" (Not GTi VR6 8V)

A very rare opportunity to own a piece of Volkswagen history.

I am a VW enthusiast and have mostly owned VW 16v GTi's. I had already spent ages looking for the best MKII GTi available, when I re-discovered this gem of a car. I'd dreamt of owning one of these in my teens, but never thought I'd see one in the UK.

A brief history : The "Limited Edition", a 210bhp, 142mph four wheel drive Super Golf was launched by Volkswagen Motorsport in 1989. Until very recently this is the fastest ever Volkswagen offered for sale by VW and is a masterpiece of technical ingenuity.

Only 71 of these individually numbered, ultra fast and civilised sports hatches were ever built. Every single one was hand-built and sold prior to coming off the production line. Two three-door models were made, one has since been crashed and the other is on display at the Wolfsburg Museum, Germany.

The Limited is a subtle mixture of five door Golf, Syncro and Rallye, hand-built by Volkswagen Motorsport at the rate of two cars per week, which explained the price tag of nearly £25,000.

I bought Number 41 of 71 early in 2004, and cherished it until I sold it in 2006.

For the enthusiasts amongst you, I have tried to provide a comprehensive description of Number 41 below, yet those of you that are genuinely interested will undoubtedly want to know more.

FEATURES & CONDITION

Very Good Standard Appearance - It looks just as it did the day it left VW MOTORSPORT in Hanover (not Wolfsburg!) except for the professional right hand drive conversion, a quality lifetime-guaranteed hand-built stainless steel exhaust system, and a "Fort Knox" style alarm/immobiliser system. It even has the proper Blaupunkt Montreal stereo with security card, and the Warning Triangle & VW First Aid Kit in the boot. There are also some subtle enhancements under the bonnet. Original VW items such as G60 Master Key, Service and information pack, and VW Press Office tax disc holder are also present.

Historical Value - this car is already a piece of motoring history, being just about the fastest production VW Golf ever, with clear classic credentials. Also, it was the only Limited to ever be officially imported to the UK by Volkswagen. I doubt an opportunity will arise again to own a car like this - no exaggeration.

Security System - COBRA 832SU - Central window and door locking - with two immobilisers and certificate for insurance purposes.

UnbelievableSpecification - full range of extras including Power Assisted Steering, 15" BBS Split Rim Alloys, Hella Half Darkened Rear Lamp Lenses, Sunroof, and Central-Locking. Plus the really special stuff like full black leather interior, comprising of heated front seats, door cards, steering wheel, hand brake and gear lever gaiters. Anti-lock large diameter disc brakes all around. Traction Control. Four electrically operated windows. Electrically operated and heated wing mirrors. Electrically operated headlamp range control. Very special blue tinted glass all round.

Driving - The heart of the car is a supercharged and intercooled version of the standard 1.8L 16v twin cam engine, developing 210bhp at 6500rpm and 186lbs of torque at 5000rpm. Therefore, the drive is superb, with spot on handling provided by the four-wheel-drive system, and the car feels genuinely tight and fresh - a tell tale sign that it has been well looked after and a testament to the very low mileage. This car really does drive like new. It'll bring a massive smile to any driving enthusiasts face.

Service History - Bear in mind that having not covered 49k miles by 2006, not a great deal of servicing has been required. Just the annual checks and fluid changes etc. As Number 41 was originally owned by VAG for the first two years of its life, all servicing was undertaken by them. Since 1992, I have some good service records from the various specialists that have worked on the car. The last service was done on 18 May 2006, and I spent over £1000 a year on servicing and maintenance. Lots of old receipts exist to verify the works, and all of the old MOTs to verify the mileage. Even the old tax discs are present!

Low Number of Owners - First registered on 6 April 1990, I have the original V5 document showing the previous owner to be VAG UK Ltd (Milton Keynes), and the original number plates from VAG UK. Since then there have been three enthusiast owners, who have really just used the car for shows etc.

Bodywork - CONCOURS - IT REALLY IS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS. The exceptional paintwork is in excellent condition with a Permagard coating applied a year ago. All the original stickers are present - in the boot, door shut, filler flap etc., hence no accident damage. I have had the car fully checked out by VW and Classic Car enthusiasts, and there is no evidence of any accident damage or indeed any major work at all. I have never seen a MkII Golf in better condition.

Alloy Wheels- 6.5J x 15" BBS split rimalloys in excellent condition and tyres have plenty of tread.

Interior- This interior is also the best I have seen in a Mk2, with absolutely no sagging, tears or holes and a firm drivers side bolster. MFA also works perfectly. There are a few minor marks upon the trim within the boot area only.

Performance- The Limited has the same power to weight ratio as that of a modern Lotus Elise, but with handling assisted by 4WD, ABS and EDL (Electronic Differential Lock - Traction Control). It's quicker over the quarter mile sprint than the legendary Lancia Delta HF Integrale, and more powerful than the contemporary BMW M3. This gives a measure of comparison for this very special car. And it's all wrapped-up in a totally understated, practical yet luxurious, five door shell. The ultimate Q car.

A Very Exclusive Club - With only 71 ever built, and the whereabouts of a lot of those is suspect these days (see - the official G60 Limited Edition website - http://www.vw-racing.org/ - needs updating!), this has to be one of the rarest hand-built production cars in the world. It attracts international attention; very recently I had a "research" enquiry from France, and I even had historical correspondence from Saudi Arabia in which the author requested the opportunity to buy the car!

Extras - All of the original parts removed during the RHD conversion. Such as; Power Steering Rack, LHD Dash board, Cooling/Heating system and vents, Pedal box etc. were retained. There are at least 30 significant parts available, so that Number 41 can be readily be returned to LHD if required. All of these parts were transferred to the lucky buyer, as they belong to the car, and his plan was to reinstate the LHD.

The "Dress-Down Kit". See the photo taken of the car adjacent to water. This kit comprises a set of BBS RA 15" alloys with four matching BF Goodrich tyres with plenty of tread and special "VW Motorsport" centre caps, a standard single headlight grill, a 10-disc Sony dual remote control CD changer, which runs through the original 1990 head unit via an FM modulator, stealth rear sound shelf with good Alpine speakers, rubber VW car mats to protect the carpets, custom made drivers seat cover, a bonnet bra and Armoured Door Plates for all doors.

DOCUMENTATION
  • V5 Registration Document
  • Current MOT Certificate + past MOTs
  • Original VW Service and Information pack
  • Alarm certificate
  • Complete Blue Printed parts list for Number 41, direct from the Motorsport factory in Hanover.
  • 16 Magazines with a total of 63 pages of articles on the G60 Limited Edition, a majority of which actually feature Number 41, including an excellent cover shot. I have scans of these articles available digitally for genuine bidders, but they are very big files.
Status - The car was sold in 2006, for the bargain price of £7500, and the spares were all disposed of separately. A very sad day for me, but a happy one for Mark.

When it comes to the world of high-performance Golfs there´s no doubt that the most highly-tuned examples are to be found in the custom areas of the GTI shows. But by the same token it doesn't follow that only a modified Golf can be wild - when VW flex their muscles they can create some pretty impressive machinery.

However, unlike some of the more radically styled vehicles, when VW build a seriously quick Golf they don't scream about it from the rooftops. Just look at the plain-looking G60 Limited Edition. THIS PARTICULAR EXAMPLE belongs to Rick Walkner, from Grimsby. If his name sounds familiar, it should: Rick is the owner of R&A Design, the wellknown firm who specialise in body styling parts, sports exhausts and accessories for most types of water-cooled Volkswagen. For those of you unfamiliar with the company, it was officially founded in 1994 as a full time company, expanding to new premises in Grimsby in 1997. Specialising initially in just Volkswagens, Rick has since branched out into other marques and reckons that the French GTI market - Saxos and 106s - are currently amongst his strongest lines. lt was actually through his business that Rick first got to hear about this particular G60 Limited, which at the time belonged to a guy called Kevin Smith. As Rick explains: "Kevin used to do a few bits of paintwork for me, as he owned a massive garage. He also used to be responsible for running Volkswagen's massive distribution centre at Grimsby. "In 1990 the G60 Limited was one of the test cars an the Volkswagen Press Fleet that were lent out to journalists. It was used as a press car for about nine months to a year, at which point Kevin bought it off them. "It was then professionally converted to right-band drive by Kevin's garage using all genuine parts. It then got used as a runabout by his wife - Kevin used to have all sorts of other cars, including a Corrado." During this time, the car was maintained with almost religious zeal, and was serviced every 2,000 miles, and even had two cambelt changes. By 1995, VW changed plans and Kevin found himself no longer in control of the Grimsby distribution centre. At the same time his garage business was taken over by the Dixon Motor Group. It was at this point that he offered Rick the first refusal an bis rare G60 Limited, which had only covered 15,000 miles at the time. Needless to say Rick bit his arm off...

Since then, Rick has used the car as a second vehicle, using it only once or twice a weck and well and truly pampering it. He's also taken the opportunity to treat it to a few of his bolt - on goodies - nothing irreversible you understand - and it often takes pride of place an the R&A stand at VW shows. The most obvious addition has been a smart set of R&A's Schmidt TH Line alloys, which are a whopping eight inches wide and shod with 215/50-15 tyres. Rick points out that "they don't catch at all, either" - probably due to the extra clearance offered by the Rallye inner arches.

EAGLE-EYED READERS may also have spotted the Milltek stainless steel tailpipe poking out of the back valance this is a custom-made system that Rick had specially built for the car. To complement this system he's also slipped a K&N panel air filter into the original airbox. The only other subtle tweaks he's made to the car have been to spruce up the engine bay by polishing the manifolds and colour-coding the rocker cover. Rick is at pains to point out though that "it can all be returned to stock." However, although the subtle looks of the car are very appealing, it's the performance that Rick really rates. "It's much better than a VR6", he comments, "and it has a wave of torque from about 3,500rpm all the way to 7,500rpm. When it comes an power it's very rapid." Rick, does admit though that he rarely drives the car hard and doesn't really use it that much at all. "It's for this reason - and to fund future plans for the business - that I've decided to offer it for sale. I'd really like it to go to some enthusiast who will be able to get more use and enjoyment out of the car than me." So if you fancy owning one of the most desirable Mk 2 Golfs of them all - and easily the quickest - you'd best give Rick a ring at R&A Design (01472 811711). Just make sure you're prepared to offer over £9,000, or £10,000+ if you also want the Schmidt alloys. There were only 70 Limiteds ever built and as far as we're aware, there are currently only four in the UK (one owned by a Scot, one by the former H2O Konnection and one with roof bars based around the London area).

Just think, for less than the price of brand-new Skoda Fabia 1.4 you could be behind the wheel of a real piece of Volkswagen folklore. Can you imagine the fun you'll have when your 'Plain Jane' five-door Golf creams away the opposition at the traffic lights?
