Trance es un género de música electrónica que se desarrolló en los años 1990. La música trance está caracterizada generalmente por un tempo entre 120 y 140 BPM, fraseos melódicos cortos de sintetizador y una forma musical que sube y baja durante cada tema.

El nombre está indudablemente ligado a la capacidad del género para inducir estados alterados de conciencia conocidos como trance. El efecto de algunos tipos de música trance se ha relacionado con la música usada en antiguas prácticas chamanísticas.

El sonido del trance posterior a su génesis en la época acid se dice que nació como un derivado del techno en clubs de Alemania y Bélgica en los primeros años 1990

Hacia mediados de los años 1990, el progressive trance, que surgió tanto a partir del acid house como del progressive house, se consolidó comercialmente como uno de los géneros dominantes de la música dance. Este progressive trance se centra las líneas de bajo y las melodías principales, dejando de lado los patrones hipnóticos, repetitivos y arpegiados habituales en el primer trance de corte analógico y espacial.

Al mismo tiempo, otro tipo de trance se volvió popular. Se trata del uplifting trance, que tiene cambios y subidones más largos y exagerados de lo habitual, siendo más directo y menos sutil que el progressive, con tonos y melodías más fácilmente identificables.

El trance se hizo inmensamente popular, ocupando un nicho que era más arriesgado que el house, más tranquilo que el drum and bass y más melódico que el techno, lo que lo hacía accesible a una mayor audiencia. Artistas como Tiësto ,Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond, Gareth Emery, Ferry Corsten, Rank 1, ATB, Paul Oakenfold, Pulser entre otros se aprovechan de estas características
