Kanaan, Power, Wilson, Castroneves.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Oriol Servia says there's "a little Dali" in him. At least, the surrealist painter rides along in the No. 5 KV Racing Technology car.
Part of a Salvador Dali self-portrait is outlined in black on the side of Servia's helmet – an inspiration and testament to a strong work ethic and creativity. Both are from the Catalonia principality of Spain.
"I've always liked his work for many reasons and I've always had something of his typical drawings on my helmets for the last 15 years," said Servia, who toured the Salvador Dali Museum on the waterfront. "I've had the melting watches. For the last year and a half I've had his face on the side. I think it's very cool because it's his typical crazy face and also the way he looks from the car it's almost like he's peeking out from the cockpit. It gives the helmet a different look."
Dali was born May 11, 1904, and trained at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. His work became internationally known when three of his paintings were displayed at the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh in 1928. He soon became a leader of the Surrealist Movement. He died in 1989.
"I'm not a big art person in general, but I love his work because there's so much detail in it," Servia said. "He was so creative and he's one of the few painters that got to see his success. It was always an inspiration to see somebody so creative and being successful doing his own thing. We only see his craziness, but he was a really hard worker.
"I believe there are some similarities. (As a race car driver) you have to be creative and you are doing something completely different than most people. You're doing something that most people would tell you you're crazy the first time you tell them you want to do it."
Purchasing a ticket to visit the St. Petersburg collection is as close as Servia has gotten to buying a Dali original.
"It's proof that I'm not as successful as he was because I can still not afford any of his pieces, but it is a goal I have," he said.

KV RACING TECHNOLOGY HAS STRONG QUALIFYING EFFORT AT HONDA

GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG

POWER TO START SECOND, SERVIA SEVENTH

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - - APRIL 5, 2008 - - Round #2 2008 IndyCar Series season -

In just their second IndyCar Series event KV Racing Technology had a strong qualifying effort with Will Power posting the second fastest time and teammate Oriol Servia the seventh at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on the 1.8-mile, 14 turn St. Petersburg temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Back on a more familiar street circuit both KVRT entries were among fastest cars on track from the drop of the green flag in qualifying. Power, KV Racing Technology #8 Aussie Vineyards – Team Australia Honda/Dallara/Firestone, made it to the Firestone Fast Six Shootout, the final round of qualifying, where he posted a time of 62.532 seconds (103.627 mph). Meanwhile Servia, KV Racing Technology #5 Honda/Dallara/Firestone, got as far as the second round falling less than .1 of a second from making the finals with a fast lap of 62.742 seconds (103.279 mph).

Power began the day fifth on the speed charts following yesterday’s twin 90-minute practice sessions with a quick lap of 63.598 seconds (101.890 mph). In today’s split morning practice session, which saw the field divided randomly into two groups, Power, who ran with the first group, turned a fast lap of 63.657 seconds (101.795mph) good for fifth in his session, but only 14th when the two groups were combined. Servia, who was 10th following yesterday’s practice with a time of 63.737 (101.667 mph), ran with the second group and with extra rubber on the track, posted a fast time of 63.165 seconds (102.589mph), putting him third overall on the combined practice report.

Qualifying was held utilizing the recently announced new format. During the first round of qualifying the field is split back into the same groups as in the morning practice, with each group running for 20 minutes. The top six drivers from each group, a total of 12, then advance to the second where they run against each other as a group for 15 minutes. The top-six then advance to the Firestone Fast Six Shootout, the final round, where they run for 10 minutes more minutes with the fastest driver earning the PEAK Motor Oil Pole Award.

Power ran in group one during the first round and turned the fastest lap in his group posting a time of 62.656 seconds to advance to round two. Shortly thereafter, Servia, in group two, joined his teammate in the second round after turning the fifth fastest time, 63.165 seconds, in his group. In the second round Power was the fastest of the 12 remaining drivers with a time of 62.135 and advanced to the final round. Unfortunately, Servia could only manage the seventh fastest lap, 62.742 seconds, and did not advance. In the final round Power came up just a little short losing the pole to Tony Kanaan by .077 of a second.

“My original goal was just to get into the Firestone Fast Six,” Power said. “But, now I am a little disappointed that we didn't get the pole considering the time we posted in the previous session. But, overall I'm happy to be on the front row. It's very good for Aussie Vineyards and for KV Racing Technology. Most importantly, it's a payback to the team. They've been working so hard over the last month - working long hours and they haven't been seeing their families - so I 'm very happy for them.”

Commenting on qualifying Servia said, “I am very happy. The whole KVRT team performed very well. Will (Power) was second fastest and I almost made it to the Firestone Fast Six Shootout. Half a tenth was all I needed. I am very happy with the car, definitely a huge improvement from last weekend and we are really proud with the way everything is going. Last weekend we were trying to survive and this weekend we are contenders. We knew we were going to be better on the street and road circuits, but honestly we didn’t think we were going to be that close to the top IndyCar Series team. But we’ll take it!”

Power will be making his 32nd career start, 30th on a road or street circuit, second in the IndyCar Series, second with KV Racing Technology and first in St. Petersburg tomorrow. Both of his U.S. open-wheel career victories have come on street circuits (Las Vegas and Toronto in 2007) as well as five of his six career poles. The talented Australian is currently 25th in the championship standings with 10 points following the season opener last weekend in Homestead.

Servia will be making his 127th career start (125 in Champ Car), 18th with KVRT, second in the IndyCar Series and second on the streets of St. Petersburg. He previously ran here in 2003 in a Champ Car qualifying ninth and finishing 12th. Servia, who was highest finishing former Champ Car driver in Homestead, is 12th in the standings with 18 points.

"open wheel racing starts". Eso está bien.
