menudo desastre ORIOL SERVIA (No. 5 CDW/KV Racing Technology): "This is one of those races that the stars were not aligned for us. The first stop, first gear wouldn't go in. The second stop, the fuel didn't go in. But at that point, the CDW KV Racing Technology car felt good. We were still competitive and had a chance to move up to the front. Then a piece of debris from another car took out my left mirror. So the IndyCar officials made us stop to repair it and we lost some laps. KVRT has worked hard this year, and it is nice to see, as Will (Power) showed, that we have a good car and can be competitive on any racetrack. So, at least as a team we ended up on a good note. Unfortunately, I lost a couple of positions in the points, but I am still pleased to have finished the season in the top 10 in the standings." |

IndyCar teams look at drivers for '09 season Now that the IndyCar Series crowned Scott Dixon as its champion, it's time to assess the driver lineup for 2009. -- KV Racing Technology is one of the teams to watch. Neither Oriol Servia nor Will Power has a contract for next season. Team co-owner Jimmy Vasser said deals hinge on the IndyCar Series returning to Australia for a race next season (and beyond). Vasser said half of the team's budget comes from Aussie Vineyards. Vasser has stressed to his partner, Kevin Kalkhoven, the need to keep continuity no matter what happens with that race, but so far, Kalkhoven has not committed without the help of the primary sponsor. -- Justin Wilson also is one to watch. He hasn't been told whether Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing will exercise the option on his contract for 2009. -- Meanwhile, Vision Racing owner Tony George said it's "almost put to bed" that Ed Carpenter and A. J. Foyt IV will be the team's drivers next season. -- Marco Andretti still has not signed to return to Andretti Green Racing, but that seems like a formality given his family's investment in the team. If he signs, all four drivers will return in 2009. Rookie Hideki Mutoh has a two-year contract with the team that extends through next year, and Danica Patrick also has another year left. Tony Kanaan just signed a five-year extension.-- Former Super Aguri Racing Formula One driver Anthony Davidson has spoken with IndyCar team Panther Racing, and he could join Panther as the newly signed Dan Wheldon's teammate in 2009. GP2 Series driver Mike Conway also is being considered if sponsorship can be attained. |

Doornbos to the IRL in '09 UPDATE #3 We hear Trust will be the primary sponsor for Doornbos. They have been added to our 2009 IndyCar Silly Season page above. 09/07/08 Confirming what AR1.com rumored below a week or more ago, the Indy Star newspaper reports that HVM boss Keith Wiggins said he is close to locking down a two-car IndyCar operation in 2009 with EJ Viso and Robert Doornbos targeted as the drivers. Our 2009 IndyCar Silly Season page (see link above) already listed HVM's two drivers for next year as Viso and Doornbos. We assume Doornbos still has backing from Harry Muermans. Will Wilson be back with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing? After having a lackluster year before finally winning in Detroit last weekend, Justin Wilson said he still hasn't been told if his contract will be picked up by the Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing team for next season. Indy Star Overheard at Chicagoland - Sunday 2 We hear that the AGR team is working hard to keep their ALMS program going if sponsorship can be found......Word in the paddock is that Jimmy Vasser is working hard to keep the exact same driver lineup and pretty much the same personnel lineup in the KV Racing Technology team for next year. They have not won any races yet this year yet but they have been fairly competitive. We hear in the off-season they have some aero and mechanical R&D planned in an effort to catch up to the established IRL teams.....When asked about putting Dario Franchitti in Dan Wheldon's seat for this year's Surfers race, Chip Ganassi told AR1.com "It would be nice if we can make that happen, since he will be driving that car next year. We are working on it."......We hear that Jay Howard has a couple of sponsors lined up for 2009 but it is not enough for a full year yet. He prefers to stay in IndyCar but would consider ALMS or Grand-Am if nothing pans out in IndyCar. Mark C. reporting from Chicago Overheard at Chicagoland - Sunday 1 Bruce Ashmore was seen in the Honda hospitality area still pushing his low downforce, high HP ideas for the next generation IndyCar. CART tried this one year, it ruined the racing and the cars become suicidal coffins on wheels. Road racing is one thing, but high banked ovals? Order the flowers and plan the funerals.......We hear that Enrique Bernoldi will not be back in IndyCar this year, having torn a ligament in his left thumb. We also hear he will not be returning to the Conquest Racing team next year either. The team is very happy with Alex Tagliani and are trying their best to put a sponsorship package together around him. Bernoldi is talking to a lot of other teams for 2009......We hear that AGR would consider a 5th IndyCar team in 2009 if the sponsorship was there. Rafael Matos, who just wrapped up the Indy Lights title for the team, would love to move up, but the money does not appear to be there. We hear he will run a Grand-Am race in Utah for the Michael Shank team and he will compete for the factory Mazda team at Road Atlanta as that manufacturer re-enters sports car racing. We hear Mazda likes Matos so don't be surprised if the IRL loses the very talented Matos to ALMS in 2009. Why wouldn't Matos want to drive for a factory team? He has had 8 Indy Car test days with AGR and has been very helpful to the team at some of the tracks he tested on. Even though he beat up on all those American drivers in his very first year in Lights, won the Atlantic championship last year, and is obviously very talented, it appears unlikely that a team will pick him up in IndyCar as it sits right now, and that is a travesty for open wheel racing because talented drivers continue to walk right out the door because of lack of sponsorship. Mark C. reporting from Chicagoland Overheard in Chicagoland - Saturday UPDATE We forgot to mention that Dale Coyne told AR1.com Saturday that it is very likely he will have the same driver lineup in 2009 (Junqueira and Moraes) as he does this year. The team, like most ex-Champ Car teams, lacks the money to go Wind Tunnel testing to improve their car aerodynamically like Penske, Ganassi and AGR have to be competitive on the ovals. If the car won't go through the air fast enough, there isn't much the driver can do when the car is 100% throttle and completely trimmed out and it's still not fast enough. You could try to make the track shorter like Helio Castroneves tried to do in qualifying for the Chicagoland race Dario Franchitti talks to reporters in Chicago Saturdayyesterday by driving below the white line and hope Brian Barnhart doesn't see you (he will of course).......Also forgot to mention that Dario Franchitti said in his press conference yesterday at the track there is a possibility he will drive for Ganassi in the non-points event at Australia in October. "I think there's a definite possibility of that," Franchitti said. "I think Dan's [Wheldon] going to do the race with Panther (Racing), so I don't see any roadblock to doing that. I think if I could get a couple days testing in first just to get used to things again, that would definitely be helpful." 09/06/08 We hear that the Australia race was given the option of running in early spring by the IRL, which they probably should do if they ever want the race to be a points paying event. September does not work for the promoter because of Australian football playoffs, and the IRL has no intention of ending their season outside the USA, especially in late October, well into the American football season........We hear another reason the IRL will switch to a turbo engine, besides all the reasons we have given previously, is that the turbo helps an Ethanol powered engine perform more on par with a gasoline engine. Remember that ethanol generates less power per gallon than gasoline, hence why if you put ethanol in your fuel tank your fuel mileage drops noticeably. We hear the engine manufacturers who are talking Tony George lets nepotism get in the way of his team winning racesto the IRL about the new engine are ok with staying with ethanol.....Look for Vision Racing to keep the same driver lineup of Carpenter and Foyt IV as this year. Tony George doesn't have the heart to fire his stepson and his godson even though they are not performing adequately on the road courses, which will soon comprise 50% of the schedule. Meanwhile, Paul Tracy who destroyed both of them in Edmonton (his only race) sits on the sidelines. Blood is thicker than common sense. ........Not sure how many cars will be on the IndyCar grid in 2009 but it could be over 30 if everything falls into place we hear. In this economy, however, that is doubtful. Mark C. reporting from Chicagoland![]() IRL may deep-six Surfers race UPDATE #2 The clock is ticking not only for the future of the street course race in Australia but the future of the IndyCar Series team tied to that country. KV Racing Technology, which has an Australian owner (Kevin Kalkhoven) and an Australian sponsor (Aussie Vineyards), needs the Surfers Paradise event to continue in 2009 for it to have any reasonable chance to duplicate its performance this season and grow. Team co-owner Jimmy Vasser said Saturday at Chicagoland that the financial backing of Aussie Vineyards represents "half of our budget. It's key," he said. Indy Racing League officials hope to resolve the Surfers Paradise race before the Oct. 26 event, which was added to the schedule as a non-points race during the unification process with Champ Car. Vasser, who won CART's driving championship in 1996, said he has been pushing Kalkhoven to commit to continuing the team regardless of what happens to the Australian race, but Vasser said: "He's not there yet." Indy Star [Which is what AR1.com reported to you back on August 19th in this rumor i.e. no Surfers race, no KV Racing.] |

Indy safe until 2013: Spence September 10th, 2008 WITH 43 days until the 2008 Nikon 300 Indy, Sports Minister Judy Spence last night said she was confident the event would run until 2013. More than 100 guests, including Indy chairman Terry Mackenroth, Indy CEO Greg Hooton, Team Australia boss Craig Gore and V8 Supremo Tony Cochrane, were at Q Deck at Surfers Paradise last night. It was the first time the 38 Miss Indy finalists had been paraded to the public. Photo gallery: 2009 Bartercard Miss Indy calendar girls Ms Spence said Indy would be on the Gold Coast until at least 2013 and her trip to Indianapolis with Mr Mackenroth to negotiate with the IRL owners earlier this year helped. "We talked to Tony George (IRL boss) and they were very interested in the Gold Coast race and I'm very confident we will have Indy until 2013," said Ms Spence. Mr Mackenroth said the event, which had been surrounded by uncertainty, would remain as strong as ever and they would like to see at least 300,000 people this year. Have your say on the feedback form below Brisbane-born Indy Racing League champ Scott Dixon, who this week took out the 2008 Championship at Indianapolis, will lead a hot field of drivers with a record contingent of Australians including Toowoomba-born Will Power and Sydney-sider Ryan Briscoe. "On the way to this event the cabbie said to me that Indy was the second busiest time for him during the year," said Mr Mackenroth. He said there would be no change in 2008 despite the IRL taking over this year's event. "We've had strong sales and hope to get the same number of people as last year (312,000) over the four days. "Everyone is really excited about this event and we want to see the 20th Indy, which is next year." Nikon, which was announced the naming rights sponsor last month, said that it was looking forward to taking part in the event "Indy is a very good product and we are very happy to be involved with the race," said Nikon marketing manager James Murray. Miss Indy finalist Michelle Vegter said she was looking forward to getting out on track and meeting the people. Other VIPs at the event last night included councillors Susie Douglas and Dawn Crichlow, V8 drivers James Courtney and Marcus Marshall and Gold Coast Tourism director Lindsay Wallace. ![]() |

By mid race, the #5 Dallara lost a mirror from the left sidepod, forcing Oriol to pit and bringing out a yellow flag for on-track debris. The team’s first attempt at a quick fix using duct tape (what were they thinking?) quickly failed and they sent their driver back out in an effort to keep him from going a lap down. The repairs were eventually made and Servia emerged near the end of the field. The veteran held on until the end of the race, picking up a few additional positions and bringing the car home in 17th place. joer poner el espejo con cinta americana de esa en un oval llendo a 350 xD |

Germans eye Coast September 15, 2008 THE German Touring Car championship, the DTM, has emerged as a surprise candidate to replace the IRL Indycar Series at the annual Gold Coast street race. V8 Supercars boss Tony Cochrane confirmed the race would take place on October 22-25 next year despite the Indycar organisers trying to move the race earlier in the year. The Queensland Government is determined to have an international category to run alongside the V8 Supercars. "I think if the IRL are stupid enough to pass on that date then the government will just pull in another international category, and there are lots of them out there," Cochrane said. Cochrane threw his support behind the DTM to create a great weekend of touring car action. The DTM runs V8-powered Mercedes and Audis and is considered one of the best championships in Europe. "We are the best two touring car championships in the world," Cochrane said. |

PHILLIPS: The Mears Factor Written by: David Phillips Senior writer, RACER Magazine http://www.racer.com/speedtv 09/16/2008 - 10:48 AM Pittsburgh, Pa. Page 1 2 Servia and Power have improved their information-sharing skills as the season has progressed. (LAT photo) » More PhotosYou’d hardly imagine that Casey Mears would have had an impact on the 2008 IndyCar Series. After all, the junior member of the Mears Gang has been plying his craft in NASCAR since 2001. And yet, indirectly perhaps, he influenced the goings-on at a KVRT that vied with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing for the unofficial honor of the top “transitional” team in this season of reunification. Bear with me . . . When events conspired to pair the fast and supremely uncomplicated Will Power with the fast and supremely team-oriented Oriol Servia at KVRT, it seemed the perfect match. Add a team owner in Jimmy Vasser who earned a reputation as the ultimate team player during his own driving career, and it figured to produce a harmony worthy of Simon & Garfunkel if not Pavarotti and Carerra. It wasn’t quite that easy, according to Servia. “Will is a great driver, extremely talented,” says the Catalan. “The characteristics that you see in any Australian you meet, he has those characteristics. They are a little bit different – in a good way. I only have good things to say about him. Enter Mears. Those with a keen memory will recall the 1999 Firestone Indy Lights Championship produced a 1-2-3 finish for Dorricott Racing, featuring Servia, Philipp Peter and Casey Mears. They not only dominated on-track, they became fast friends – in contrast to the previous season when Peter and Servia brought the traditional “European” approach to Dorricott’s two-car program. “The first year was terrible between me and Philipp,” says Servia. “We didn’t talk to each other and it created a terrible atmosphere in the team, where the whole team was down and the engineers were not talking to each other. “The year after, magically, when Casey Mears came on board, the three of us ended up having the best year off the track and on the track because we really worked together.” Mears concurs. “When I joined the team things were pretty tense. I said to Philipp and Oriol, ‘Lighten up guys. Sure we’re racing each other, but if we work together it’ll be better for all of us and we might even have some fun.’ We ended up having a blast. I still rate it as the most fun season I’ve had racing. Oriol and I stay in touch, we call each other every month or so. It’s a little harder with Philipp ’cause he’s back in Europe, but we’re still good friends.” “That season with Casey and Philipp taught me a lot,” Servia continues, “and I think with Will it happened a little bit because he’s definitely changed. As the season went on he opened up more; he saw what I can bring as his teammate to make him better and he’s seen that we have very similar feedback. It just works better in a very competitive place, especially with so little time on track.” Case in point: the Mid-Ohio race. Friday morning’s practice produced less than scintilating form for KVRT with Power and Servia 17th and 19th, respectively, on the timesheets. Power was relatively nonplussed, figuring his times would improve as he – and his car – came to grips with the idiosyncratic circuit. Not. Friday afternoon saw Power and Servia 18th and 19th fastest at 1:09.5642 and 1:09.6515, respectively. That evening Servia, Power and the KVRT engineers put their heads together, perhaps as never before. The result? Servia leapt to fifth on the Saturday morning practice timesheets with a 1:08.1350. While Power was still in the mid 1:09s, a setup change based on Servia’s setting saw the Australian carve 1.4sec off his previous best in qualifying to all but match the Catalan’s morning time. By then, of course, Servia had continued to press ahead with his setup and produced a 1:07.9308, but the point was made. Emphatically. “Mid-Ohio is a good example of how we worked it out,” says Power. “We went there and we were nowhere. We were both way out of the window so it was easy to identify that it wasn’t the drivers, it was the cars that needed to be sorted out. Between Oriol, myself and the engineers we caught up very quickly and the next day we were able to qualify reasonably well and then race very well on Sunday. So that was a good example of us working together as a team.” “To me it was, ‘Wow! I think we can do something as a team,’” Servia concurs. “Because even a top team, when a weekend starts bad, it’s really difficult to turn things around. It takes good engineers working together on the data and it takes good drivers all thinking as one.” Even if one of those drivers was hundreds of miles away at the time. |

Franchitti confirmed for Surfers race GET LIVE UPDATES TO YOUR MOBILE PHONESubscribe Today!
Count in Dario Franchitti for the Nikon Indy 300 on Oct. 26 on the streets of Surfers Paradise, Australia. Target Chip Ganassi Racing announced that Franchitti will make his first appearance in the No. 10 Honda-powered Dallara in the race alongside reigning IndyCar Series champion Scott Dixon (No. 9 entry). "I'm really looking forward to getting into the Target IndyCar and to do so in Surfers Paradise, which is one of my favorite tracks, is a big bonus," said Franchitti, the 2007 IndyCar Series champion. "I'm excited to start working with the team, and Scott as my new teammate. I think this will give us a good jumpstart on the 2009 season." Franchitti was the 1999 winner of the CART-sanctioned event at Surfers Paradise. The battle for the series title between he and current Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Juan Pablo Montoya took a dramatic turn that race as Franchitti stormed to a victory from the pole to unseat Montoya for the championship lead. |

Montagny to test with AGR next week By Steven English Friday, September 19th 2008, 16:31 GMT Franck Montagny will test an IndyCar for the first time with Andretti Green Racing at Kentucky on Monday. The Frenchman drives for AGR in the American Le Mans Series but is looking to return to single-seaters after the reunification of Champ Car and the IRL left him without a drive this season. He was set to drive for Forsythe in Champ Car this year and raced in the final event of the series at Long Beach in April, but was forced to turn to sportscars when Forsythe did not enter the Indy Car series. Montagny made several A1GP outings for Team France and was part of Peugeot's factory line-up for the Le Mans 24 Hours before joining AGR's ALMS squad in July. Monday's test at the Kentucky Speedway will be his first experience of an oval and he is expected to follow it with a road course test later this year with a view to racing a fifth AGR entry in the IndyCar Series next season. Andretti Green already have Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Danica Patrick, and Hideki Mutoh under contract for next season. |

IRL engine manufacturers get homework By Mike Harris / Associated Press Posted: September 19, 2008 Five engine manufacturers left a two-day meeting at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this week with homework assignments. "We had a couple of good days of meetings with (several engine) manufacturers back in town in a continuation of the process begun in late June with the initial roundtable," said Brian Barnhart, the Indy Racing League's president of competition and operations. Barnhart said there is a consensus on about 70 percent of the package for a new engine that would be used in the IndyCar Series beginning in 2011. That's where the homework assignments, due in six weeks, come in. The timeline for defining a spec and receiving a commitment from manufacturers to replace the workhorse Honda Indy V8, which has been the sole power plant for the IndyCar Series since 2006, remains the end of the calendar year. That would allow proper lead time for design/development and manufacturing for full-scale testing in 2010. Among the changes being considered are the addition of turbochargers to the currently normally aspirated engines used in the IndyCar Series. Honda, currently the sole engine supplier for the series, was one of the five manufacturers represented at the latest meetings. IRL officials declined to identify the other four. "We're very encouraged again by their participation and enthusiasm about potentially joining the series," Barnhart said of the other manufacturers. "We clearly went into more specifics than in our June meeting and made a lot of progress toward defining the potential specs for 2011, and were encouraged by the fact that they're all very much interested in continuing this process." He said the remaining questions are very specific and very important. "The homework assignments for the engine manufacturers are to make sure they have a comfort level with the power required to meet (the) performance levels, in addition to the durability requirements and cost parameters we're looking for," Barnhart said. "We're going to work with Dallara and Firestone in terms of the chassis and tire portion of the package to see what can be done in terms of grip levels, downforce and drag levels to create the performance levels we're looking for." Dallara will remain the sole chassis supplier, but also is working to come up with a new design for 2011. "If the performance levels can be met that we're expecting, combining chassis, tires and the horsepower levels, then we've settled on a spec. It's important for us to integrate all of it with the diverse schedule that we run," Barnhart noted. He said individual follow-up conference calls will continue, with a third round of formal discussions tentatively scheduled for late October. |
