History GT/103 was completed in June of 1964 and was sent immediately to the Motor Industry Racing Association for a very brief testing session in preparation for the 1964 Le Mans 24-hour race. At Le Mans, it completed five hours (86 laps) and then retired with gearbox trouble. Following Le Mans, GT/103 competed at Reims, but again didn’t finish. In November 1964, the car was at Ford/FAV Slough, England where it was fitted with a 289 High-Performance engine in preparation for the Nassau Speed Week. Unfortunately, GT/103 retired twice with suspension trouble. After Nassau, both GT/103 and its sister car, 104, were sent to Carroll Shelby so he could prepare them for the 1965 racing season. It was believed at the time that the suspension and gearbox problems had been worked out during the 1964 season although no GT 40s had finished a race. While the cars were with Shelby, he repainted them blue with white stripes and added Halibrand alloy wheels. The cars were shipped from Shelby’s facility to Daytona for the opening race of the 1965 season. At Daytona, it became clear that the 1964 season was successful from a development and testing standpoint. GT/103 raced into the history books as it was not only the first GT 40 to finish a race, but it also finished first. On February 28, 1965, with Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby behind the wheel, GT/103 won the 1965 Daytona (2000Km) race. Following its victory, GT/103 finished second at the Sebring 12-hour race (McLaren and Miles) and third at Monza (McLaren and Miles). Prior to its Nurburgring start, with Phil Hill at the wheel, GT/103 was fitted with a 325 cubic inch engine – the only GT 40 ever so equipped. During the race, a half-shaft broke and the car didn’t finish the race. After this race, GT/103 and 104 were officially retired from factory works duty and were replaced by GT/1004 and 1005. Fitted again with the 289 high-performance engine and mated to a ZF 5-speed gearbox, GT/103 was sold in 1966 by the factory works department to Mr. William Wonder. Mr. Wonder ordered that it be painted deep red, but specified that the original, race-winning, Daytona blue interior be left untouched. Mr. Wonder is the only private owner GT/103 has ever known — he owned the car for almost 40 years. The car remains today very similar to when he originally purchased it from Ford/FAV. It has the “Le Mans” nose, widened rear bodywork, MklII brakes, Halibrand wheels and is painted deep red. It is no longer powered by a high-performance 289, but is fitted with a 255 cubic inch four-cam “Indy” engine. Although the car stopped competitive racing in 1970, Mr. Wonder has kept the car in race-ready condition. He has raced it in numerous vintage events. |
