Background on the GT3 R In 1998 Porsche finally put the air-cooled flat-6 cylinder engine to rest. The last of the air-cooled 911s (993) left Weissach, and the assembly lines in Stuttgart. The 996 was the new 911, and its chassis was the GT car for the future of Porsche Motorsport. Every component of the 996 was new; chassis, bodywork, gearbox, engine, suspension, engine management, and coling system. (minus some details that we will talk about in each model year specifications) At the time of launch, the new GT3 R was made to the current ACO rules for the GT category in 1999. from Porsche: "The 911 GT3 R is the successor to Porsches highly successful 911 3.8 RSR. This water-cooled 996 based racer has proven to be a formidable challenger in the GT category during the final stages of the 1999 season, which marked its United States debut. The 3.6 liter six cylinder engine develops in excess of 400 horsepower and drives through a GT2 six-speed gearbox equipped with external cooling, pressurized lubrication, and a limited slip differential. The carbon fiber bodywork, combining light weight and strength, makes maximum use of current aerodynamic principles to provide excellent grip with minimum drag. The chassis of the 911 GT3 R comes completely equipped with the necessary components to comply with current sanctioning body regulations. Fitted, from the factory, with a fuel cell, externally adjustable shock absorbers, spherical bearings at suspension mounting points, electric power steering, and 380 mm., four pistons/caliper brakes, Porsches newest offering will be a "turn key" race car. The resources of the engineering and production departments at the Weissach facility are totally committed to the production of a sufficient number of GT3 Rs for private teams to mount a multi-car assault for Daytona 2000" Also in 1998 the last overall victory for Porsche was made at Le Mans in a Prototype vehicle. Soon after the factory announced it would step down from a full factory effort on sportscar racing. The concentration would be to support privateers. The GT3 R was the result of that decision, and the more than a hundred GT3 R and RS's have been made and sold (at this point in early 2003) for competition around the world. Competing in the USA, Europe, Asia, and Japan. More than half of those produced reside in the USA. The car has won its class in every arena it has entered.

1999 GT3 R specifications Porsche 911 GT3 R prototype Engine not much is known about the specifics of what was inside the engine but the two prototype cars had one-off motors, made up of 962 based engine parts, the early GT3 R cars had a 964 engine case, some of which just had freeze plugs in the oil return tube holes. The parts in the production GT3 R 3.6 engines were sand cast, unlike these, and continued to use the 996 GT3 engine as its base. 3.2 liter based on Porsche 956/959/962/GT1 maximum torque ? power ? restrictor ? maximum rpm ? water cooled with oil heat exchanger dry-sump lubrication intake system with six throttle valves Bosch (?) fuel injection with detonation control exhaust manifold open, without catalytic converter Power Train six speed manual transmission type ? Le Mans was almost flawless for brand new cars 1999 GT3 R - stateside 23 car as driven by Dirk Muller, and Cort Wagner for the rest of the season after Le Mans in the USA. Cort Wagner also won the Porsche Cup in 1999. Alex Job ran the car along with a 993 RSR. Manthey Racing was the entrant name because of championship points. Aqui unas foticos recientes del nuevo gt3 The Next Generation: New Porsche GT3 almost complete, should arrive in mid '05 GREG KABLE Posted Date: 8/25/04 Porsche is already at an advanced stage of development with its new 911 GT3. And while the car appears almost complete, our sources say you’ll have to wait until mid-2005 at the earliest before you can even place an order for the car. Part of a multifaceted new 997 lineup, the GT3 continues Porsche’s tradition of building circuit-compatible cars for the road. Rumors say the new 911 GT3 will ditch the old model’s hard-revving 3.6-liter engine for the latest evolution of Porsche’s normally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine. In the 911 Carrera S, the new four-valve-per-cylinder 3.8-liter engine generates 350 hp, but Porsche insiders claim power could jump to as much as 400 horses with the redline extended beyond 8000 rpm and other internal modifications such as lightweight pistons, more advanced VarioCam variable valve timing and a larger air intake That’s up 20 hp vs. the old GT3 and, with appropriate gearing from a standard six-speed manual transmission, should be enough to blast Porsche’s latest rear-engine road racer from 0 to 60 mph in something less than the 4.18 seconds we recorded in our tests of a 2004 GT3 Underneath, GT3 is expected to forgo the new Porsche Active Suspension Management system for conventional springs and dampers, both in the interests of weight and race-car compatibility. They will be tuned more aggressively than those found on the standard 911, and provide the new car with a lower ride height. Grip is supplied by standard 18-inch rubber. The three-piece alloys of the prototype in our spy photos will be replaced by wheels designed exclusively for the new GT3. As these photographs reveal, the new 911 GT3 receives a series of unique styling elements, including a curb-scraping air dam up front boasting three large ducts to direct cooling air to the radiators while also helping to reduce the marginal levels of front-end lift found on the standard 911. The rear gets an adjustable wing hung out over the engine and a reworked valance panel at the bottom of the bumper assembly, housing twin central exhaust outlets. |
