![]() 06/05/2006 Hezemans claims pole for first race in 2006 The first 20-minute qualifying session for the FIA GT Championship saw Mike Hezemans claim pole position in the nr 4 GLPK Carsport Corvette C6, ahead of the Zakspeed Saleen S7 and the Phoenix Racing Aston Martin DBR9. The session was wet, although the rain had eased slightly. "It was all down to the tyres," Mike said of his Michelin-clad car. "They were so good, there was so much grip, it was fantastic. The track stayed very wet, and there was so much traffic, but I managed to get one free lap." ![]() La Primera victoria de la FIA GT es para "Maserati MC 12 del team Vitaphone Racing" Bartels and Bertolini win Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy The 2006 season of the FIA GT Championship got off to an excellent start in Silverstone today, with the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy. In front of 15,000 spectators, and despite wet weather, a thrilling race kept the excitement going until the end, when Andrea Bertolini and Michael Bartels claimed the historic trophy for Vitaphone Racing Team. A clever strategy saw their Maserati MC 12 triumph ahead of the Zakspeed Saleen S7 and the Aston Martin Racing BMS Aston Martin DBR9, making three different makes on the podium, and five cars on the same lap after three hours of racing. In GT2, Matteo Bobbi and Jaime Melo, in the nr 58 AF Corse Ferrari 430 GT2, were victorious ahead of Ebimotors' Porsche 996 GT3 RSR of Emmanuel Collard and Luca Riccitelli, promising excellent things for the season ahead. ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Calificación en Brno ![]() First FIA GT pole for Jarek Janis For the first time since 2004, a Saleen S7-R will start from pole position in the FIA GT Championship, after Jarek Janis placed the nr 9 Zakspeed car at the front during the 20-minute free practice session. With a lap of 1:55.660, he finished ahead of Jamie Davies in the nr 2 Vitaphone Racing Team Maserati MC 12 and the nr 5 Phoenix Racing Aston Martin DBR9, making three different makes in the top three for the second race in a row. The nr 4 GLPK Carsport Corvette C6 was fourth, ahead of the Silverstone winner, the nr 1 Maserati MC 12, which is the heaviest car in the field. GT2 pole for Scuderia Ecosse and Tim Mullen Ferrari dominated GT2 qualifying in Brno, with five of the new cars leading the time sheets. For the second race in a row, Scuderia Ecosse captured pole position, although this time it was the nr 63 Ferrari 430 GT2 which set the best lap. Tim Mullen claimed his first FIA GT2 pole with a lap of 2:02.104. He is sharing the car this weekend with British driver Phil Bennett, his regular team-mate Chris Niarchos being unavailable. As well as racing in the FIA GT, Mullen and Niarchos are competing in the British GT Championship, where they have won all three races to date. Mullen was just over a tenth of a second faster than Silverstone pole-sitter, Andrew Kirkaldy, in the team's second car. "It's a good result for the team," Tim said. "The car is pretty good on new tyres, so Michelin and the team did a perfect job. It is a very challenging track here, so it is important to find a good race set-up." Third place in GT2 went to Tim Sugden in the nr 55 JMB - GruppeM Ferrari 430 GT2, ahead of the two AF Corse cars. The leading Porsche, in 6th position in GT2, was the nr 75 Ebimotors car of Emmanuel Collard and Luca Riccitelli, 1.5 seconds ahead of the second Porsche, their team-mates Moccia and Busnelli. Resultado de la segunda valida en Brno ![]() Zakspeed, JMB Racing Victorious at Brno Brno is renowned for close, exhilarating racing in the FIA GT Championship, and the 2006 edition lived up to all expectations ! Although local hero Jarek Janis and his German team-mate Sascha Bert dominated the race in their Zakspeed Saleen S7, the battles for the remaining positions raged throughout the three hours. The GT2 race was undecided until the very end, with JMB-GruppeM Racing's Tim Sugden and Iradj Alexander coming through to take the chequered flag. After morning showers, the rain kept away and the spectators were able to enjoy the very best that GT racing has to offer! VICTORY FOR ZAKSPEED After finishing as the runners-up in Silverstone, Zakspeed Racing's duo of Jarek Janis and Sascha Bert dominated the second round of the FIA GT Championship. Their nr 9 Saleen S7 was fastest in free practice; Jarek Janis claimed pole position, as well as the fastest race lap, and last, but by no means least, Bert and Janis won the race, finishing over a minute ahead of their nearest rivals, the Phoenix Racing Aston Martin DBR9. Phoenix was the only other car to lead the race, Andrea Piccini having taken the lead at the start, holding Janis back for the first 13 laps. "This weekend is like a dream comes true. I'm really happy to be here in the first place." Jarek said. Sascha Bert was equally delighted. "During the winter nobody was thinking about us, but I have a great team-mate, Jarek did a great job, and it is fantastic to be here, in this press conference, in the middle of the table! We are leading the Championship, so I hope we can carry on and do a good result at the next race. With such a team, and partners, and Michelin tyres, it is possible to have more good results!" The duo has taken the lead of the GT1 Drivers Classification, three points ahead of Silverstone winners Bertolini and Bartels, while Zakspeed is now joint second in the GT1 Teams Classification. In the Manufacturers' Cup, Saleen has already more points after two races, than they scored in the whole 2005 season. The last Saleen victory in the FIA GT Championship was in Imola 2004, when Vitaphone Racing's duo of Bartels and Alzen claimed the win. JMB GRUPPEM RACING VICTORIOUS IN GT2 If the GT1 race was close, the GT2 battle was epic. Less than ten laps before the end, the class was being led by the nr 59 AF Corse Ferrari 430 GT2, with Aguas at the wheel. Aguas was under attack from a fast-closing Andrew Kirkaldy in the nr 62 Scuderia Ecosse Ferrari, who had just overtaken his team-mate Tim Mullen in the nr 63 car, who was suffering with its tyres. But as the nr 63 fell back, the two leaders collided, leaving fourth-placed Iradj Alexander to take the chequered flag eight laps later, in the nr 55 JMB GruppeM Ferrari 430 GT2. The car had been on a different strategy from most of the others, after an early puncture forced them to pit early. Tim stayed out until the 50-lap point, nearly at the maximum of the possible driving time, and handed the car over to Iradj, who put in a fine performance, and claimed the win, making up for their Silverstone retirement. "It was an incredible finish, Iradj did a great job at the end, and we are very, very pleased." Tim said afterwards. This was Iradj's first FIA GT victory and he was delighted. "A few laps before the end there was oil on the track, so I choose to push in order to make the difference. It was very slippery; it was like on a race on ice!" he exclaimed. |
