IEL*- IDP EDUCATION LIMITED

IEL Continues To Profit From The International Education Boom

The education of international students is now Australia’s third largest export*– just behind iron ore and coal. One high quality business that has successfully leveraged off this growing industry is IDP Education (ASX: IEL). IEL is a global leader in international student placement services. It recently reported their FY17 results that point to a robust business with good prospects.

While net profit growth of just 4 per cent appears pedestrian on the surface, this is largely due to a one off tax benefit that boosted the prior year figure, the impact of the rising Australian dollar as well as some one-time costs from the acquisition of Hot Courses at the end of January. When we dig below the surface, the results show continued strong momentum in the core English Testing and Student Placements businesses.

In the English Language Testing Business, volumes increased 9 per cent in the six months to June relative to the same period last year. This is despite the disruption from the demonetisation in India reducing test volumes by another 15,000 in the March quarter. Adding these test volumes back implies sustainable growth of 12.5 per cent as IDP’s share in Australia stabilised and organic growth in other markets was boosted by the entry into markets like Nepal and Japan. Importantly, volume growth in India returned to ‘pre-demonetisation’ levels in the June quarter. This points to another year of very strong test volume growth in FY18 as the business cycles the impact from FY17.

In the Student Placements business, volume placed into Australian institutions grew 4.2 per cent in the six months to June while placements into international institutions grew 20 per cent. The benefit of increased diversity in the student destination offering was evident with changes to visa regulations and political concerns in the UK and US being offset by strong volume growth into Canada and New Zealand.

The results showed continued momentum on domestic commission rates with average revenue per placement increasing 10.4 per cent in the six month period relative to the prior year, as IDP renegotiates its commission rates to bring them into line with competitors. The company renegotiated contracts with 15 universities during the year, and has around half as many yet to finalise. This should see good yield growth continue into FY18.

The other comments of note relate the performance of Hot Courses business, which was acquired at the end of January.

Hot Courses runs tertiary institution and course information websites such as hotcourses.com, hotcourseabroad.com and thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk, with around 70 million visitors each year. It primarily generates revenue from the sale of advertising space on its websites. However, it also sells subscriptions to universities in which data on visitor traffic to the pages relating to that university’s courses is provided for lead generation.

While only a small part of the revenue base for Hot Courses, this data presents IDP’s Placements business with an enormous and potentially powerful source of student leads. The main constraint on growth in the Placements business is leads rather than agent capacity. By passing this data to IDP’s agent network, it could step change the volumes in the business.

From early June, IDP undertook a trial using the data that was not purchased by one of its university customers. This data yielded 5,000 leads over a 10 week period. The interesting part is that 59 per cent of these leads were converted into hot or warm leads. This conversion ratio compares to an 18 per cent *conversion ratio of leads from IDP’s current website. While very early days, this highlights that Hot Courses could be a very powerful source of high quality leads for IDP’s Placements business.

As we look to FY18, the outlook for testing and placement volume remains strong. While the continued appreciation of the Australian dollar will dampen revenue growth to some extent, it will also reduce foreign currency denominated costs. The lower realised rate on the British Pound due to high hedge rates will result in lower English language test fees paid to Cambridge Assessment, boosting Testing gross margins.

IDP will begin to roll out its new computerised testing product later this year, starting with Australia. This has the potential to cause some near term disruption, but it is an important milestone in ensuring the competitiveness of the IELTS product and its ability to meet the needs of a range of consumer preferences.

The company will also continue to take costs out of the testing business and reduce the time taken to post results by expanding the number of countries utilising computerised marking to 38 from 29 at the end of FY17.

FY18 will see Hot Courses contribute on a full year basis. The business has been integrated and progress in delivering the strategic benefits of the acquisition will be an important factor to track through the year.

While there will inevitably be other factors presenting headwinds to the outlook that come up during the year, FY18 looks like another year of good progress for the company

IDP Education has entered into an agreement to purchase a 20% holding in HCP, a Chinese company specialising in delivering English language test preparation materials.

IDP will promote its student placement services to the Yasi Ge user community – a large proportion of whom have goals to study abroad – and will be HCP’s exclusive partner for study abroad services in the country.
HCP has already run periodical promotions for IDP’s counselling services for study abroad, said Barkla.
“These campaigns have been successful in generating a large volume of qualified enquiries from students, which have been followed up by our education counsellors in China,” he said.
In FY16, close to 30% of all IDP placements came from China, according to Barkla, with Chinese student numbers up around 50% compared to the year before.
“We have traditionally had a strong reputation in China for delivering quality services for students interested in studying in Australia,” he said.
“Our focus is now on broadening this expertise to our newer destination markets, especially the UK and the US. We have been doing this by upskilling our counsellors and investing in new technology platforms.”

Beneficial counsel

FOR over 25 years, IDP Education Malaysia has offered comprehensive counselling services for students looking to study in Australia, as information from Australian Education International has stated that more Malaysian students are choosing to study in Australia than any other overseas location.
As the demand in Malaysia for overseas higher education maintains a strong foothold with the country's consistent economic growth being coupled with parents' desire for their children to pursue an education outside of the country.
However, the recent rise in affordable higher education programmes here in Malaysia has parents wondering whether there are opportunities that still provide the best return on investment when studying abroad.
This dilemma is filled by Australian universities, as they are widely known for excellent teaching skills and research facilities, whilst leading the world in innovation and quality in the country's approach to vocational education and training.
Graduates that have studied overseas often demonstrate the necessary creative, innovative and independent thinking attributes that are imperative for development and career path, as the exposure grooms students to work hard and be independent in order to be successful; these are just the sort of attributes employers look for in an employee.
At IDP Education Malaysia, trained and experienced counsellors work around the clock to assist students throughout their journey in exploring education opportunities present in Australia. This goes beyond a counsellor merely matching a prospective student's choice of study with a suitable institution.
Being at the forefront of the education industry, IDP has invested in technology to help Malaysian students find the very best of institutions to study in. With access to exclusive innovative software, students will obtain up-to-date information on the institution of their choice.
In October, IDP Education Malaysia will be hosting the IDP Australia Education Exhibition from Oct 10 to 18 in seven major cities; Kuala Lumpur, Subang Jaya, Penang, Ipoh, Johor Baru, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.
With over 20 prestigious universities and institutions participating in this exhibition, it will be a great opportunity for students and their parents to meet with IDP Malaysia's trained Australian counsellors and representatives to discuss the options best suited for their higher education.
Students can move through flexible study pathways to gain the right balance of practical skills and theoretical knowledge for their future careers. These education providers have worked together to create a well-established system that assists students in moving easily from one level to the next. These stringent quality standards are overseen by the Australian government, as they ensure that graduates return home to begin their careers more "job-ready" than their counterparts.
An opportunity not to be missed for students hoping to commence their Australian study aspirations for the February 2018 intake, students who want to apply on the spot are to bring along the required documents and certificates to the exhibition.
Attendance at the exhibition is free and to ensure attendees can see the institution of their choice, it is important to pre-register online to redeem interesting prizes during the event.
This year, there will be seminars held in Kuala Lumpur and Penang by prominent universities. These seminars will be equipped with interesting topics of discussions that will be useful for students to explore education opportunities in Australia. Speakers from these universities will cover topics from Medicine & Pharmacy, Architecture & Design, and Business to Engineering, just to name a few in these seminars.
For more information or to pre-register for the exhibition, visit www.idp.com/malaysia

Canada increasingly attractive to global students – IDP

Posted on Oct 18, 2017 by Patrick AtackPosted in News, under North America.

Bookmark the permalink.Canada has come out on top of a new IDP research paper on global study destinations, due to its safe environment and government policies which are seen as warm and welcoming.

Canada's safety and position as a welcoming nation makes it a top study destination, according to new IDP research. Photo: Flickr/Abi KShare this:

About Patrick Atack
Patrick Atack is a multi-platform journalist, with experience working internationally for Euronews TV. Originally from the UK, he studied abroad in Oregon and he holds a Master’s in International Journalism from City University London. He's also a passionate sports fan. From football to road cycling, if there’s a game on, he probably has some clue who’s winning.
The rise of Canada was the main reason that both Australia and New Zealand lost out
IDP’s Student Buyer Behaviour research looked at the top five English-speaking destination countries, and examined how 4,200 mobile students rated a range of the nations’ drivers, including safety, affordability, education quality, and graduate employability.
Canada is highlighted in the report as a destination experiencing momentum in the global study market, while the US lost out in regard to safety, affordability, visa requirements, and graduate employment opportunities.
“We haven’t changed too much. Canada’s always been a safe and clean destination”
The UK was not hit as hard as some may expect by the choice to leave the European Union, but the research does indicate that it is seen as a less safe study travel destination in 2017.
The research, now in its sixth iteration, was released by IDP Education’s head of research Lyndell Jacka at the Australian International Education Conference in Hobart.
It reveals that although Australian affordability remains a concern to some students, the rise of Canada was the main reason that both Australia and New Zealand lost out to some extent.
As far as student motivations are concerned, the research breaks the mobile student population down into three main categories. For Indian and Indonesian students, course content quality and post-study work opportunities were priorities.
However, for Vietnamese and Malaysian students, affordability and self-discovery ranked most highly.
On the other hand, Jacka points out that Chinese students are motivated by the reputation and quality of the institution they wish to study at.
“When we explored the number one reason why they chose to study abroad, one in ten Chinese students said ‘study at a high-ranked university’,” she said.
Wendy Luther is the CEO of EduNova, a cooperative effort from institutions and Nova Scotian government to boost the profile of the eastern Canadian province as an education destination.
Luther told The PIE News that Canada’s gain can really be attributed to their continuing message of openness and changes in its neighbour’s demeanour.
“We haven’t changed too much. Canada’s always been a safe and clean destination,” she said.
She pointed out that instead of Canada moving to capitalise on globals events that may make nations like the US or the UK less attractive to international students, EduNova and the Canadian government are taking a consistent approach to marketing and recruitment. And they are feeling the effects.
“We’re going out with the same message… and the students are more respective to [our] message,” Luther said.
But changes to citizenship and employment pathways have had an effect too.
“[Canadian] pathways are becoming more open,” Luther observed. “Last November the rules changed, making more points available for international students. This is not the same approach as what’s happening in the UK and US.”

IDP Philippines, the local office of international education services firm IDP Education, brings international education opportunities closer to the north. It opened its Baguio nook recently at Calle Uno, in Quezon Hill, Baguio City.

With their new office, students and parents who are interested in getting education placement advice no longer need to travel all the way to Manila in order to do so. The office provides access to university brochures from different universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

Schedule An Appointment With IDP Education Counsellors

Through the Baguio office, students can browse through the program brochures if they do not have an institution in mind. They can also schedule online consultations with IDP’s trained education counsellors through the IDP laptop available.

Counsellors are assigned specific countries, except for the senior counsellors who cover all five countries. Each counsellor is knowledgeable about the country’s requirements and will help assess what is the best program for a potential student. This also depends on the student’s qualifications, career goals and budget.

IDP services are free of charge and it usually starts with assistance in fulfilling course applications, up to assistance in visa applications and even pre-departure orientations. According to one of its education counsellors, IDP has a high approval rating for its applicants, ranging from 95 to 97 percent.

Sign Up For IELTS

IDP Education co-owns the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), one of the world’s most popular English language proficiency test. Signing up for an IELTS exam can be done through the Baguio office. If you sign up via IDP, you get a 30-day free access to IELTS preparation through their online portal.

The IDP Baguio Nook is located at Calle Uno Co-Working Space, First Road near Naguilian Road, Quezon Hill, Baguio City.
