Risi Competizione returns with new Ferrari

The last time Risi Competizione ran a full season in the American Le Mans Series was in 2004, Giuseppe Risi returns with his team for the 2006 season to again take on the powerhouse Porsche teams in the GT2 class.

In 2003, Risi took on the dominant Alex Job Racing Porsche team, they finished second in the GT class battle and earned the IMSA Cup as the top privateer team. They returned in 2004 and took top honors at the Lime Rock event, breaking the hold of 20 class wins by Porsche.

Risi might have set out last year campaigning his own team, but the Texas-based shop was supplying logistical support for Maserati in the GT1 class.

This year Risi will campaign the new Ferrari F430GT, adding a touch of spice and a fond remembrance of Porsche and Ferrari putting on a show on the race circuits.

"This new car looks very promising. Intense chassis development by Ferrari has resulted in greatly increased stiffness, and the car features a new larger displacement engine design with more horsepower," commented Risi.

To add to the mix, two Panoz Esperantes fielded by Multimatic Motorsports Team Panoz will be apt to score race wins, along with the two entries in the new GT2S category: Team PTG BMW M3s and Lexus IS 350s fielded by Team Lexus.

"I'm really looking forward to joining battle with a stellar list of GT2 competitors, including Porsche, BMW, and Lexus," Risi said. "The competition on track will be great for everyone: manufacturers, teams, drivers, fans, quite simply everyone. We expect to fly the Ferrari standard high this year."

The GT2 fight for the championship has never been dull, particular last season when Alex Job Racing and the eventual champions Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing took the title fight to the season finale.
Risi understands that the GT2 field "will be very competitive" this year. Something he looks forward to as his team and drivers have notched victories in sportscar racing over their eight year history.

German racer Ralf Kelleners will return as one of the team's pilots who gave the team their win over Porsche in 2004 with co-driver Anthony Lazzaro after the two teamed up in 2003 with Risi Competizione. Kelleners, like many European racers, started his career in karting before moving up the ladder into open-wheel and touring cars.

Once he entered the sportscar racing fields, he scored a class win at the prestigious Le Mans event in 1996. The German followed up his 1996 success story with a victory in the Daytona 24 hours, an event he won again in 2002. Over his career, he has notched many a podium finish and added to his win total. Add to the fact, that Kelleners' has two titles: the 1994 German GT title racing a Porsche Carrera RSR and in 1997, he scored the German Formula Ford 2000 title.

Risi has not yet announced the other three drivers for their two-car stable for the 2006 season which starts at the historic Sebring International Raceway. The March 15-18 Sebring 12 hours sets the tone for the ten race schedule which winds up at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California on October 21st with a race from daylight to twilight.

"It looks a very exciting calendar" adds Risi, "everyone in really fired up for the challenge, and we are particularly looking forward to the race in Houston, our home turf."

Saludos!
