Britcar 24 Hours: Race Report Tuesday, 12 September 2006 Endurance BMW racing specialist, Duller Motorsport, beat 52 other GT and Touring cars to win the second annual Britcar 24 Hours of Silverstone over the weekend of September 9-10. In contrast to last year's torrential rain, this year's event was staged in beautiful sunshine, with temperatures soaring into the high 80's. Dieter Quester, Dirk Werner, Jamie Campbell-Walter and Tim Mullen drove the Red Bull liveried Duller Motorsport BMW MZ4 Coupe to win by 16 laps. The race was without incident for Duller Z4 as the car lost oil pressure while leading in the 4th Hour and lost 15 laps repairing an oil cooler. This was Quester’s and Duller Motorsport’s second 24-Hour victory this year having won the 24-Hours of Dubai in January. The race also marked Dieter Quester’s 53rd career 24-Hour race. The race was marred by many yellow flag periods, including an almost 4-hour yellow flag period when a thick fog rolled in the early morning. Most of the other yellows were for cars stuck in gravel traps, including one with 15 minutes from the checkered flag. The race favorite Moslers, including last year’s winners, encountered problems early in the race and were never a factor. The Rollcenter Mosler piloted by Martin Short, Nick Jacobs and pole sitting Jamie Derbyshire suffered fuel starvation problems in the first hour and spent 2-hours in the pits trying to fix the issue. Last year’s winning effort were never in contention after that. The #2 Eclipse Motorsport Mosler lead for 2-hours after the Duller Z4 suffered its problems, but encountered problems of their own dropping them down the order. They ended up finishing 10th overall, second in class, 14-laps behind the class winning J & S Porsche RS. A pair of BMW E46’s battled for top honors in the GTC class and finished second and third overall. The second place Moore International BMW E46 was piloted by American Zak Brown, who had limited success in Barber Saab, Formula Vauxhall and F3 in the 90’s. Brown currently runs a marketing company in Indianapolis and was instrumental in landing the Johnnie Walker sponsorship for the McLaren F1 team. Fourth overall, and second in class, was Marino Franchitti, Bill Cameron, and Barry Horne in a Porsche GT3 Cup car of Team Parker Racing. The car suffered some minor problems throughout the race including having to change the ECU in the first hour. The 911virgin.com Porsche GT3 Cup car was leading overall throughout the night and were headed for a podium finish after they lost the lead to the faster Duller Z4, but dropped out with mechanical problems after 21 hours. Another race favorite was Cor Euser in the Marcos, which finished 8th and Adam Sharpe Motorsport’s V8 Super Car Ford Falcon, driven by Tommy Erdos encountered various problems, but salvaged a 22nd place finish. Class 3 was the most competitive class with a handful of Honda Integra Type R’s battling with a pair of Mazda RX-8s and the under-dog BBG Porsche 944 made up of enthusiastic amateurs. Class 3 was won by Daniels Motorsport’s Honda Civic Type R, finishing 7-laps ahead of the 944. The race was full of international stars. Ex-F1 drivers Martin Donnelley and Mike Wilds shared a Mazda RX-8 to finish sixth in class 3. British racing hero Ian Flux’s RX-8 suffered many problems throughout the race, but almost managed to finish on the podium in class 2, as the Honda Civic running in front of them slowed with 10 minutes to go. Overall the race was a lot more successful then last year’s and the organizers announced that the race will be back at Silverstone next year. | BMW manda como quiere en carreras de resistencia. Ya lo hizo con el M3 GTR, y ahora esto, que con apenas dos o tres carreritas largas, ya es campeon. |
