Ford GTR 2007

Sponsoring the Ford GTR for 2007 is a unique opportunity. The cars we race will become part of Motorsport history regardless of outcome. The effort is in the hands of a proven team, and is poised for good results. Our sponsorship package includes a marketing support program that is not normally part of such a plan.

In the following article, I will provide some background on the Ford GTR and GT40, as well as on our team, Doran Racing. Further, I will outline our plan to implement this racing effort, both practically and technically, as well as from a marketing point of view. We are committed and funded to race one car in the world's most famous motor races; our hope is to run a team of two or three cars. Whether as a major sponsor or a one-event only backer, this is a chance to enter into a part of American Motorsports history.

As you probably know, the original Ford GT40 won Le Mans three times in a row in the late 1960s. This makes it the most successful American effort to date in the world's most prestigious endurance race. Original Ford GT 40s are collector cars worth between $800,000 and $4,000,000, depending on individual car history. In the past two years, Ford has created a modern supercar, the Ford GT, which emulates the look of the original GT-40, with modern performance. Ford produced around 3000 of these cars, sold at a retail price between $150,000 and $250,000. This is the basis for our racing car.

Today in endurance racing, the most successful cars in the premier production-based GT1 class are the Pratt and Miller Corvettes and the Prodrive Aston Martins. Other competitors include the Ferrari 550/575 Maranello, Saleen S7R, and Lamborghini Gallardo. The Corvettes won their class at Le Mans in 2006. Bringing the Ford GT into this arena will incite a classic American confrontation-Ford vs. Chevrolet.

The Ford GT has made it on the cover of virtually every American and many foreign car magazines. This is for good reason, as the car is a masterpiece on par with the world's best, and the Ford vs. Ferrari wars of the 60's are recalled as perhaps the most exciting time in motorsport.

People love this car. In early July, I was at the vintage Le Mans race, and there were over 50 new Ford GTs. The owners came from all over Europe, just to see a few vintage GT40s race. There is a Ford GT Chat room with 3000 active members.

We are designing a website which will feature Ford GT TV, a full length documentary on the birth of this car, to be released in 2 to 3 minute segments starting in the fall of 2006. You can see a sample at my personal website (Yououghttoknowthis.com, click on Ford GTTV.) Ford GTTV will be fed with about 100 related catch web sites, which will be natural motorsports links. These include many good domain names, which people will hit; these names are so good that we already get 30,000 hits per month and we are not even open yet. Our goal is to end up with a website with at least 50,000 monthly hits. Further, we will design feeders that relate to our sponsors.

Supplementing the internet feeders, we will have small "awareness" ads in automotive specialty magazines such as Road and Track, The Ferrari Market Letter, Hemmings Motor News, Sportscar International, as well as international collector car magazines such as Classic Car, MotorSports, and Auto Motor und Sport. Further, we will establish a small presence in venues like The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Economist. Our goal is to plant a seed which will grow into a strong enthusiast support base of regular followers. The earlier you sign up as a sponsor, the more you will be involved in this cross-promotion.

In addition to the website and the documentary movie, there will be support materials such as tee-shirts, caps, bags, and models. Our plan even includes a coffee table book about this effort at its conclusion. Some of these materials doubtless will be collectible in years to come. As a sponsor, you have an opportunity to be part of all or some of this. You will have access to very good quality photos and digital film footage. It is almost certain that REGARDLESS OF OUTCOME there will be photos of the Ford GT racing effort in most of the world's automotive press.

The outcome promises to be good, based on past history and other factors. Kevin Doran and/or our team have won the "24 Hours of Daytona" 5 times. Further, we have won the "12 Hours of Sebring" once and the "6 Hours of Watkins Glen" many times. We have also been to Le Mans, placing third.

Though we are not a $50,000,000 Pratt and Miller Corvette racing effort, we will go to the races with some advantages which even the Corvette does not have:

1--Dollar for dollar we are one of the best--if not the best--performing sportscar team in the world.
2--The Ford GT is the best production car platform in the field. As a mid-engined car, it has an intrinsic advantage over all its competitors, except the Saleen. The Saleen, while successful, has never been operated by a team with our credentials.
3-- The Ford GT has an aluminum chassis, and is therefore very light. The only other car with an aluminum chassis is the Corvette, which is front-engined.
4--The rules currently favor the Ford GT. Because of the Corvette's racing record, it must run with certain restrictions.
5--The car will heavily rely on components which we have proven in our Daytona Prototypes, so the learning curve from design to reliable package should be almost non-existent.
6--We will run with Roush engines. We use Roush engines in our Daytona Prototype and have a good working relationship with the company, which has a long, winning heritage in both NASCAR and sports car racing.
7--Our team has a relationship with a pool of drivers which are some of the best in the world. While we have not made any definite determination, in the past we've engaged Max Papis and Jan Magnusson (both from Formula 1,) Terry and Bobby Labonte (NASCAR,) Sebastian Bourdais and Eric Bachelart (Indycar,) as well as sports car drivers Bill Auberlin, Terry Borchelar, Dieter Quester, Diedier Thyss, Pete Halsmer, and myself, Oliver Kuttner.
8--We are not running a whole season, but only concentrating on select races.

At this point, we are looking for a number of companies to provide sponsorship. The sponsorship packages range from $10,000 to 2.5 M. I will offer a few proposals to give you an idea of what we're offering:

Example 1: $10,000 investment--Buys you a decal on the car of about 60 to 100 square inches, for one American Le Mans Series race practice or qualifying session. You will also get a photo with a larger decal on the car in a pitside or studio/trackside session. While we will make an effort to run the decal during a race, there is no guarantee at this level. (This will mainly depend on how well the logo fits with the rest of the car design.) You will be mentioned as a sponsor on our websites, and will be given cross-promotional opportunities with other sponsors or media. You'll get video footage and photo materials featuring your company logo and the car. You will also receive 100 tee shirts featuring your company logo and a picture of the car. Further, you will get access to our hospitality at the races for 4, with additional guests at a price of $250 per person, which includes tickets and food. Finally, you will have all "Supporting Sponsor" rights as described below.

Example 2: $80,000 investment--We will give you significant billing on the car for the year, and we will use your product if appropriate. Your decal will be visible on most if not all merchandising material. The decal size will be about 1 SF and will be on both sides or the front or the wing. Further included are 4 tickets at all three events with catering and 200 shirts designed around your company. You can also have Associate Sponsor size decaling for one event, with the three race package becoming a one race package.

Example 3: $200,000 investment- You become an Associate Sponsor. This gives you minor but visible billing in all three events, as well as on all associated equipment such as pit equipment, uniforms etc. You get the car for your promotional use for one week, and our video production staff will make you one or two appropriate video clips, similar to our GTTV subject. The decaling will be significant , comprising the wing or a similar-sized space.

Example 4: $1,500,000 investment-At this point, you become the Main sponsor, essentially covering half the budget. Your name is incorporated into the name of the car. In the past we had the "Momo Ferrari 333SP" and the "Lista Dallara Judd." Both these cars were designed around the company logos, and are known commodities in sports car circles many years after their retirement. This package will include making available trackside hospitality at cost to very high standard, as well as promotional appearances within reason by drivers and the car(s.)

Supporting sponsor benefits:

+ Availability of the car to your event or trade show with improved decaling for you, for transportation costs and a fee of $250 per day, plus room and board. Driver available at cost, or Oliver Kuttner at $350 additionalto above.
+ Appearance on our promotional materials.
+ We will also build you a basic film commercial allowing for 3 hours of production cost.
+ Visibility at our website, with possible crosslinks to other sponsors--we will make an effort to mention you when we can.. All webwork and text is included. You also have access to our internet services company, which as you can see from this and related websites provides high quality work, in a business in which money spent and quality received are not always related.
+ We will build a fan club and will sell racing paraphernalia which gives exposure to the sponsor. Depending on the size of your sponsorship, you will be included in some or all of the material.

We have some offers at this time for a total budget of $800,000. This does not include a lead sponsor. We have a company budget for the program of more than that again. The design of the car is very important to us and we reserve the right to move around sponsors logos, or to change any offer, at any time before the signing of a contract. After a signed deal you have what is agreed to.

I thank you for your consideration. For me, this project is the realization of a project I have been dreaming about for the last 20 years. With your support, this can become a program with a historic recognition factor similar to the Gulf Oil or Sunoco Racing programs-- or the Momo or Lowenbrau cars which Kevin Doran directed in the past. There will be international exposure and a lasting effect. I believe that with the right sponsorship, the natural excitement of racing the Ford GT means this will become one of the great promotion opportunities of this decade per $ spent. When you drive a Ford GT on the street, you get a much warmer and completely different reaction than if you drive a Ferrari or Porsche. While Ferrari racing is exciting, Ford racing appeals to people from all demographics.

The program is also unique in that we are not trying to cover a whole season but rather strategic events. This will keep the program new and exciting while not spreading our resources too thin. If the weather is good, the three races we attend will bring more than 450,000 spectators trackside. The races will be televised worldwide with millions of spectators.

We will start promoting our website in earnest in October. Until then, this is an efficient way for insiders to communicate. One reason we believe that our fan following will be successful is that we will have an open door policy, which means that our sponsors, like our fans, will have access to the process of building a piece of motorsports history. This will include information that goes well beyond most news articles or information pieces you can hope to gain from a live broadcast. Join us early and reap the benefits, and help make this a self-fulfilling prophecy for you and us.
